Going Greener

The Wharehine Group of companies has been a part of the community for more than 50 years, and we set great store in sustaining the natural environment for us all to enjoy for centuries to come.

"Wharehine is committed to protecting the natural environment that we work and live in. We commit to providing our staff and subcontractors with the correct training and equipment to ensure that we minimise or eliminate any negative impact on our surrounding environment."

Wharehine is proud to have achieved ISO 14001:2004, an Environmental Management System which helps us maintain top environment standards throughout our organisation.

The entire Group is focusing on options to minimise energy use, resource consumption, construction wastage and increase recycling measures. These include:

  1. More efficient machines: The engineering team is contantly trialling fuel additives, oils, engine components and servicing methods to ensure the fleet remains at the cutting edge of low exhaust emissions and fuel economy standards. The latest additions to our fleet include Volvo and Nissan diesel vehicles that feature fuel-efficiency technology and meet the most stringent Eurpoean Union standards (Euro IV and Euro V) for vehicle emissions.
  2. Recycling: Wharehine have a policy of trying to recycle as much waste as possible. We currently recycle Waste Engine Oil, Tyres, Scrap Metal, Cardboard, Paper, Water and Oil Filters.
  3. Standards: We are committed to ISO 14001 certification, the Australian and New Zealand Standard for Environmental Management Systems.
  4. Recycled Plastic: We have a policy of only buying Road Cones that contain recycled plastic and that can be recycled at the end of their lives.
  5. Recycled Materials: Using the large crusher at our quarries, we have the ability to recycle concrete and ashphalt and use it again for other projects.
